Yeah... I'm employed. Was pretty easy, there are a lot of jobs over here so thats pretty cool.

I've got the contract now so I can safetly say I'm working at NDS, www.nds.com. I get discounted sky! They make lots of software for TV distributors, including stuff at the set top box level and the broadcast level. But as rich says, if I'm programming the boxes then surely we can get free porn.

I start next Tuesday, so I'm trying to fill in with as much gaming as I can. Hitting Guild Wars really heavilly, and Disgaea as well. Its all good. I'm about to crank into some game and I've got the ashes on the TV next to me so its all good.

Better get back to my grueling schedule of gaming.

I'm a little bit typed out as I've just sent out a flurry of emails, but here goes.

Cranking up into job hunting mode from relax mode at the moment. This is basically changing from playing games from 10 hours a day to 7 hours a day and going to the occasional job interview. Should hopefully get a cool job soon enough, haven't switched to desperation any job attitude, so as long as I keep that up I should find something that I want to go to every day. I guess thats what its all about, going to your job for more than just the money.

I'm getting pretty interesting in investing as well, definately going to start investing later this year, maybe starting when I have 5000 pounds I'm not feeling entirely attached to, going on to become a multi millionier sometime soonish. Screw having your money in a bank I reckon. Even if you are just taking out government bonds you are doing better, but I'm thinking of getting some equity, going a little bit further down the ol risk reward thingy.

I'm playing Guild Wars at the mo, I have a Ranger/Necromancer, Monk/Mesmer an elementalist I havent decided where to go with, and I havent cranked out my warrior character yet.

Mainly I've been reading and playing games, which is an entirely pleasant way to spend a holiday. London is not short of sweet places to see either.

It is a really cool city, so I reckon people should just come over here :D

Anyway, started tentatively looking for jobs last Friday, I have a phone interview today, and a couple of other inteviews next week. I'm starting looking early to make sure that I can get a cool job, don't want to leave it late, then be forced into doing some crappy job.

There are a couple I'm really interested in, but don't exactly match the requirements, so hopefully I can make up for my lack of experience in one or two areas with unbridled enthusiasm (or maybe I'll just come across as manic and scare them off :D ).

I have xbox live all hooked up now, so those of you with xbox live, chuck me in, gamertag "baz barrett". Just clocked Jade Empires which was pretty cool, and had a game of Top Spin online against some dude in Florida (I won!). I already have 8 xbox games... so thats pretty out of control really. Cat just bought a ps2 as well, and my gamecube should be coming soon, hopefully.

Bought a new comp and a new TV. The outstanding part of the comp would have to be the 7800GT graphics card! (A64 3500+, 1 gig ram, abit an8) The TV is a 26 inch widescreen LCD which supports all the new HDTV styles (480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i), so I'm ready to go for the xbox360.

Anyway, thought I would post some pics of where I have been for the last week. This is the view from the front of the stadium, my laptop is the nearest closest black laptop on the right. Well is the one to the left of that actually!

So is was basically everyones gear hooked up together, with lots of traffic going through everything, and if there was a problem you had to get onto it and fix it right away, otherwise your gear would just be removed.

This is pretty cool though, a PS2 hooked up to one of our switches.

Its a bit messy and haphazard in the shots, as this is just the setup. After all the (major) problems had been sorted out, they powered down all the boxes, and they are going to start them up next week for the actual event. I only get to go the event if there are more problems, so hopefully not! Its more of a sales people/customer sort of thing, engineers would just get in the way :D.

One bonus was that I was staying in a hotel room, that is fully bigger than the apartment I share with Cat. One of the nicer hotel rooms I have stayed in for a while for sure. Here is the view from said room.

Was helping set up for the N+I hotstage in Makuhari (www.interop.com) since saturday morning, just got back to Tokyo early this afternoon.

Anyway, hard work, late nights and all, so I'm a bit exhausted. I'll post some pics tomorrow when I'm in a better way! Oh, and I guess I'll write a better post, since this one really sucks and all.

Interestingly enough, as I'm writing this my desk is swaying somewhat alarmingly so as there is an earthquake on the go and I'm the twelth floor of a skinny apartment building. So thats quite fun.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, strawberry jam in my keys, damn my penchant for peanut better and jam sandwitches. Worst of all its right on the WASD keys. Sigh...

Seriously. The 4th of July is my last day at my current job, from which I will leave in good spirits. The atmostphere at work at the moment is really good, there has been a restructure which seems to have set the right tone and whatnot to get the job done.

So london. Yep, cat and I head off there to impinge on the goodwill of my brother and his girlfriend. I should really start looking for a job, but I'm kinda liking the sound of this unemployed thing... so much more time for gaming and programming the type of fun stuff you get to do at home.

I'm getting into some interesting code projects at the mo. After writing some test files at work, I'm thinking of expanding out and writing a fully featured packet generator. Also I want to write a ToDo list program in java, like an organiser thing, cause I'm such a uesless mofo when it comes to remembering things. Then there is dregg-stunts, a game which I started with a lot of friends, and wrote quite a bit of code for. It fizzled out for a bit, and I lost all my code when my dev HDD died, but I'm back into it now.

Was pretty excited by the unvieling of the new consoles at E3, and was incredibably amused by the fanboi postings on Evil Avatar afterwards. People can get so offended when someone doesn't like the stuff they like.

Fuck loyalty to a corporation, MS, Sony, Nintendo... they just want our money, and as long as they give me some good games they are going to get mine.

Woohoo, making up for lost posts with picture spam :D. Anway, I've had a fun last few weeks. Three weekends ago, rich and luce came up to Tokyo before they headed off from Japan. Cat, Rich, Luce and I all went to disney land which was pretty wicked.

A little bit gutted cause space mountain was closed, but thats sweet. Anyway, here are a couple of pics from disney land. (click on the pics for the crazy big sizes)

This is my first full week in ages, the last two weeks have been awesomely broken up by golden week, which is like non-stop holidays. Yeah... I played a lot of games, did a bit of reading, it was pretty sweet. Finally feeling healthy again, so thats pretty cool. Had about two weeks of feeling exhausted and like crap, with a bit of turning yellow. Strange, there are healthier shades I'm sure, but hopefully its nothing too much to worry about. Had a haircut as well! So I'm no longer a seedy long haired mofo. In case you're curious, this is what I look like now...

My mum's over here at the mo, so thats cool to catch up with here. We had an epic lunch on mother's day at the hyatt, I think I'm still feeling full from that.

Went to a cherry blossom party with some of the dudes from work. Took some shots of the sakura, which are pretty sweet (the sakura, not the shots really).

Here is a picture of me with Tim. If for some disturbing reason you are reading this without knowing what I look like. I'm the guy in the aviators whos looking, though I say it myself, a tad smarmy.

I've got a bunch of touristy shots, heres one which is pretty cool.

Went to a temple and got a fortune, which is basically a lucky dip where you can whip out all sorts from lucky to unlucky. I got the number one most lucky fortune, so take the gods words for it, not mine, I'm obviously blessed. I seem to do pretty well with the temple fortune draws.

Theres been about 4 earthquakes today, which has me feeling a little bit shaky... ok, that was too bad, I'm going to sit in the corner now and contemplate what I've done.

So I woke up at 6.30 this morning, one of the two mornings in the week that I can sleep in on. My chest was feeling tight, something was seriously wrong and I think I've figured it out.

I'm just sick and tired of my failure to commit to any personal project. Its crazy, there have been so many examples in my life where I have started something, then just ignored it and let it fizzle away. Heres the thing though, I start ignoring them just around the time I'm actually interested in them.

Something thats pretty crazy about this blog, all my bests posts, the ones that actually mean something and aren't just "blah blah games blah blah" I've never even posted. I've come up with some wicked posts, you're just going to have to believe me on this. I sit there at work, perfecting the wording on some rant or the other until I've got it just how I want it, when it actually comes to me sitting down and writing them though, never happens.

My harddrive is full of half finished programming projects that I've stopped right when I was getting interested in them. I have tax forms sitting in my cupboard that are 4 years old. It took me 6 years to get my restricted license after I got my learners, not because I couldn't do it, it only took 7 lessons and a month to get ready, but because I just didn't EVEN THOUGH I WANTED TO.

If I was just lazy I think I could accept that, but the thing is I'm not. At work I work longer and harder than I need to, at the gym I always push that extra set. I'll never slack off when playing a game of indoor soccer... shit wait a sec. I think I've got it. All that crap I just mentioned competitive pursuits ( I always go to the gym with someone else), and when it comes to competition I'm there. Who knew it would be so easy to diagnose, there you go blogs are good for you!

Anyway thats why I'm here now at 7.30 posting, I can't handle the fact I keep on bailing out on myself whenever any personal project I start gets interesting. So I'm going to keep on posting, trying to keep to the twice weekly schedule. I might not win anything for doing it, but I'm just going to have to live with that :D

Yep, another week in Tokyo, pretty cool one. Cat and I went to Hirojoku on the weekend (thats not even close to how its spelt btw :P ) and saw lots of people dressed up in crazy gears. Lolita fashion, french maids, goths, punks, pimps, more... its easy though, there are heaps of shops round you can just walk in and get yourself the full makeover.

Works same old same old, have some relatively exciting news on that front, but best left a week for the telling.

Bought all the Invader Zim DVDs, so that should be fun, also bought the Baldur's Gate 2 expansion pack, Throne of Bhaal. Yep... 60 hours of gameplay just isn't enough, so I've gone for the extra 40 :D

I am still officially on the sunday/wednesday update schedule, but got a bit distracted.

The flat is looking heaps nicer now that Cat has moved in, I have furniture!

About to chow down on some instant noodles then probably hit up the Domination: Massive Assault demo. Turn based strategy is the sweetness indeedy. The DS is getting quite a bit of playtime at the mo as well, Super Mario 64 and WarioWare mainly at the mo.

Going to join up to gamespot today. Kinda feel a bit dirty, but they have a good downloadable game store, and I get 10% off of the Chronicles of Riddick, so thats all good. Just need to get a DVD burner now so that I can back up my (legally!) downloaded games for when I have a slightly less prodigious internet connection.

Buying games online is definately how I like it. Appreciating it fully now that I am in Tokyo. Why bother with the physical medium at all really!

Well, you get a shorter blog then. I'm keeping to this Sunday, Wednesday schedule thing dammit, but it doesn't mean I have to be happy about it!

So, whats happened since last time I posted? I worked till past 9pm 3 days in a row :P, then spent this weekend playing games, with a bit of cleaning and cruising round. Binged a large Dominoes pizza in front of The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition. The credits were a bit crazy extended, like 20 minutes of the damn things. I didn't sit through them or anything crazy, just skipped through them to see if there were actually 20 minutes of credits.

Games I'm playing at the moment are Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Baldur's Gate 2. Both classic games, and both made by studios who no longer exist!

Week ahead is looking pretty fancy though, cause Catez P is coming to town! Not to visit me though... but to live me with!

Yay, woke up at 5am for no apparent reason, just woke up feeling really anxious and couldn't go back to sleep. There was also an earthquake last night which rocked the building pretty good, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Anyway played around with some java and then hit up some Baldur's gate 2, so not a complete waste of a morning. Bodes not well at all for work though, I am doing code inspection at the moment. While useful, its also exceedingly boring, and not much sleep + overwarm office = danger sleepy times at office. I've been trying to combat the boredom of code inspection by constantly writing emails to Andy mocking various bits of code, and its kinda working.

Going to be playing around with Java quite a bit this week, partly to familiarise, and partly just cause I want to write a decent amount of code, and haven't had the opportunity at work for a while. Trying to think of a puzzle game, let me know if you have any ideas for a good puzzle game.

Had a good trip to Osaka to see Cat on the weekend. Did some sightseeing as well, took some pictures. If I can be arsed resizing them I might post them (all 5 MP hugeness photos at the mo).

Also got a Nintendo DS from Cat for my birthday AND Mr Driller: Drill Spirits. The system is sweet and the game is pretty awesome too. I love puzzle games. The stylus is very easy to use, and the screens are nice looking indeedy, with all my old GBA games looking better than ever on it.

Hmmm, January the 13th was the last time I wrote a proper entry... quite of lot of stuff has happened since then.

Purely on the work front I've had quite an interesting time, spent from the 23rd till the 28th of January in Makuhari, about an hours train ride from where I live. Sweet though, had a hotel room there so that was awesome. Hit up buffet breakfasts for lunch and every dinner was shouted by the company, some damn fine meals as well. I was there for the 6th Tahi test event, which is like a IPv6 Bake-off type event, when lots of vendors try and interop with a whole bunch of stuff to make sure that everything works like its supposed to.

The event itself went amazingly smoothly, our devices worked very well, and although there were a few problems, nothing we couldn't fix.

Last week was pretty sweet too, apart from the usual run on bug fixing was able to do something a bit different and fly to Kujo university in Kuroshiki, in order to debug a problem for work. Nice to be the one gathering debug for once, rather than sitting sweating it out back in Christchurch trying to fix it :D

This week I got to go the JGN network for half a day to do some trouble shooting, so that broke up Monday nicely. Biggest hassle I had at work was spilling a mofo cup of green tea over my laptop! It instantly turned off, and I was thinking that I was pretty screwed as I can't really do anything without it. I took it up to the hardware lab and stripped it down, pulled out the hardryer and the damn thing actually worked when I put it all back together again. Pretty fucking lucky.

Apart from work I've been pretty relaxed, but been checking out various parts of Tokyo. Most weekends involve maybe a wee trip to Akihabara to see if I can't pick up something for my compy. Bought another 512 MB of ram, to bring myself up to 1 gig, seems to have helped out quite a bit performance wise.

This weekend should be wicked, Friday is my birthday, so there has been a public holiday called in Japan, I've always said that the Japanese people are very welcoming. Three day weekend of goodness, and I'm going to hit up Osaka to see Cat's flat and take some stuff back to Tokyo for her. Also I'm hoping to see the seedy underbelly of Japan a bit more, maybe some Yakuza or something. Constantly dissapointed by the lack of obvious Yakuza in my neighbourhood, still haven't seen anyone lacking in the finger department. But Cat lives in the red light district of Osaka, so there has gots to be some bad ass mofos there! I can handle not seeing ninjas, cause obviously they are wicked and can stay out of site EVEN IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!!! Obviously they are there, but just chilling stealth style. (note that use of more than 1 exclamation mark at any one time should generally be seen as a sign of mental sickness, but when used to emphasise the awesomeness of ninjas I think it can be overlooked) I'm going to Osaka on the Shinkansen so thats also sweet.

Hopefully this weekend I'll get a DS! I ordered three games for it tonight, I'll post when I get a chance to use it, but I am sure it will be wicked.

Other random thoughts to be posted soon, to this very page! It wont be so long for the next update, hopefully over the weekend I'll pick up a digital camera and takes some pics of/from the Shinkansen (bullet train).

The world's most expensive haircut

Branched out tonight, and cruised the streets looking for haircut, cause I was getting pretty unruly looking.

First place I came across was this pretty cool looking place called "Repeat of Hair", so I went for it. With a name like that you can't go wrong.

My Japanese is teh suck, and their english was the same, but managed to get a pretty decent haircut, but the mofo cost me US$70 so I guess you kinda expect that... You get your money's worth tho, pre-wash, post-wash, head massage, the full package.

All good though, I might even go back :D

Akihabara - Electric City

Went to Akihabara Electric City yesterday, so many gadgets and arcades, its awesome.

The prices are pretty good, and you can get the absolutely latest models, which is a nice change from being in NZ, where we get ancient hand me downs from other countries.

Bought a 17 Inch LCD monitor, 12ms pixel response time, 500:1 brightness ratio, so pretty damn sweet. Games are fine on it, no ghosting at all. Anyway too dangerous for me to go there too often, so much temptation.

The arcades are sweet though, only 100 yen to play the newest games, cheaper than NZ arcades. Posted a high score as well :), pretty proud of myself, it was on one of those old school scrolling shooters, so kinda a speciality of mine.

Sugoi!

In tokyo now for 2 days, not as different as I thought it would be. I'll post a couple of pictures of my apartment. Not quite as small as I thought it would be... small for sheez, just bigger than my expectations.

Had a bit of a worried moment when I arrived, cause I forgot my apartment address, but catez p emailed it to me so no probs. The trains were pretty easy to catch, enough english words here and there to make sense.

Going to have to learn some more Japanese to make it easier on myself. Hirigana, Katakana and Kanji, so much to learn to even read the signs around the place. I can say about 10 things in Nihongo at the mo, but slowly learning.

Some crazy stuff, the toilet seats at work are heated... handy!

Yep, this friday is yay its Christchurch day, which is nice and all, but the important thing is we get the day off of work. Thinking currently about biking down to sumner with Dro, chilling at the beach. Possibly reading a book there... but I don't know, don't want to stress it out and all.

Went to the beach this weekend with Luuk and some other good folk. First time I've been to the beach in ages, but it was pretty sweet. Going to have to spend lots of this summer at the beach.

Decided not to post my saved posts, as they seem kinda irrelevant now. But I'll make this post decent to make up :D

Work is kinda strange at the mo. Having a bit of trouble motivating as its all same old same old. Actually thats not entirely true, just been moved back onto an enhancement that I started, so its looking up. I have been at work know for about 21 months, and must have spent 19 of those months fixing bugs.

For those of you not in the software industry, this is kinda soul destroying work, and I've been getting sick of it. In fact I almost quit, but then stayed on when I found out I could go to Japan in Feb. So getting off of bugs is a good thing.

Played soccer tonight, we kicked some arse, won like 12-4, but didn't really count, as we were just playing a friendly, the other team didnt show up. Must be scared of the might mauve huckers!

What I'm going to try and focus on (well as soon as I've finished my season 7 sg1 DVDs :) is upping my software skills with some more DreGG Stunts. The main problem I'm facing is that its been so long since I've done any OpenGL, and now I'm facing writing an entire graphics engine. Anyways, should make me better regardless of the outcome.

Also managed to contain my mad wanton desire to buy an Xbox. Cause you see this game called Halo 2 has just come out (like you dont know!)... and it looks good. Its all about saving up for christmas now, gots to buy pressies and all. Yay for christmas, best time of the year!

Well I'm going to try and motivate myself to start programming some dregg-stunts and maybe liven up the DreGG website a bit. Basically we have LANs quite a lot, and are writing a game together. Slowly at the moment, but I expect things to speed up once we have something we can play a bit.

Gordon is going to start on the physics engine today, so I will probably try and do some work on the graphics engine. Fun times!

less than 10 weeks to christmas

yeah, so I love christmas, its the sweetest holiday

anyway pretty laid back week so far, not much on the go managed to pull a muscle playing indoor soccer, then played another game with a gammy leg... :P

The upside of this is that I am now walking with a pirate style swagger, and will be at least for a couple more days. Since pirates rule, I am pretty stoked by this.

Woohoo, Saturday... by far the best day of the week. Sunday has too much of the work next day vibe about it, but today I can just laze and chill.

Not that I have been particularly lazy, its been a pretty hectic sort of day. Bought some new shoes (indoor soccer has so far destroyed 3 pairs (>_<) ), a rugby ball and a soccer ball. Then biked to uni and went to yoga for the first time ever. I tell you, that shit is hard. I was shaking during parts.. crazy.

Anyway after that, Dro (flatmate) and I kicked a soccer ball round uni for a while, then biked back home. I then had to run down to the other side of town so I could help my friend's mum move chairs.

But I'm home now, going to try and get a little bit of myst 4 inbetween cooking tea and going out to meet Lay at Main Street cafe later on. There could be people going to town, but I don't know.. feeling pretty damn tired at the mo, would be quite sweet to chill to a movie.

Just reporting in, currently the Scottish team is trailing behind the Dutch team by 1 game to 5. I suspect it is Luuk's dutch heritage granting him pwnage powers. Look, I'm linking my gaming slang because I care.

I'm expecting a refreshed and revigorated Scottish team to continue making stupid mistakes well into next week :P

On a side note, I have now had two whole seperate people write a comment on my blog. Mwahahahahaaaa, my plan for world domination is slowly gathering momentum.

Woah, I just ordered the Stargate Series 7 Box Set and Myst 4 The Collector's Edition and consider myself lucky to have got away with so little.

The verge of bankruptcy loomed, I was beckoned by the 9 disc Aliens Quadrilogy, the Star Wars DVD trilogy wantonly called me, my button hovered for far far too long over the Invader Zim DVDs "Add to Cart" button. The fact that I do not currently own the Family Guy DVDs has to be the single greatest act of will ever seen by mankind. Such is the allure of online shopping.

Its just so damn easy, not to mention fun. Just consider yourself warned...

Skype, tis the shiz

Maybe I'm a little late to this voice over IP thing, and you are all going nato calling people from your comp as we speak, but I have to say internet telephony is awesome.

Skype is what I use, a pretty fancy free service... imaging instant chat but with voice instead. Started up a game of dawn of war last night, but before that started up a skype converstation.

It was clearer than the phone, and awesome just to be chatting away as you play. I guess you xbox live dudes would have experienced this already, but I can see this being big in the future of online gaming.

I'll put up a big post tonight, starting to get the hang of this thing.

Sweet, just got back from a LAN at Gordons. Another successful DreGG LAN. Dawn of War ruled the day, with a bit of MOHAA for the old school and Counter Strike: Source... which I guess is old school as well.

Haha, the forces of chaos were out tonight in their party pants. After painting my units up a wonderful hot pink with yellow trim, I'm sure everyone else was too busy avoiding looking at my awesomely garish squads to fire on them.

I just realised that a lot of what I write, perhaps a whole lot, may require some pretty in depth knowledge of games to make any sense whatsoever. I'll try and keep down the obscure game references :)
